The foreskin provided valuable protection to the delicate glans many years ago, before
we all wore trousers and underpants. Today this protection is no longer necessary
since your baby’s nappy and later his underpants adequately perform this function.
If that was all there was to it nobody would bother having their baby boy circumcised.
Unfortunately, the now redundant foreskin causes many problems.
On the next six pages I detail just some of the more common problems caused by the
foreskin. However, bear in mind that this is by no means a fully comprehensive
list and so problems do need looking at in more detail.
Problem 1: Smegma, sweat, stale urine, germs and bacteria build up under the foreskin
Problem 2: Urinating is a messy, unhygienic - and sometimes distressing - experience
Problem 3: Ten times the number of urinary tract infections (UTIs) than those who have been circumcised
Problem 4: It doesn’t look or feel nice
Problem 5: A child can worry about what is wrong with his penis; is often ashamed of it
Problem 6: Lesions prevent the foreskin being retracted in early years
